Breathe Fresh Air. Plant Olive Trees with AKL Maui.

August 2nd, 2010

Here at AKL Maui we are planting our first 1000 trees on the slopes of Haleakala on the most isolated set of islands in the world.  Help us plant acres more.

Olive trees play a vital role in the daily life of all communities.  They help provide breathable air, blockage from damaging wind, a way to maintain fertile soils & increase bee population.  With one small act we can all make a big impression.

Uses of Olive Trees

Olive trees can be great for cooking as well. The olive does not taste very well directly from the tree, it actually tastes very bitter. Because of the thickness of the wood of Olive Trees, it is used to make furniture or articles of everyday use. The leaves of olive trees have several medicinal purposes. They have a calming effect. They also help people for relaxation purposes and helps people go to sleep. The Olive tree leaves bring down high levels of cholesterol, therefore helping increase the power of the immune system. The oil is good for the cardiovascular system and the circulation of fat in the body as well.

The  olive tree is a symbol of joy, peace and happiness and as such makes an excellent gift. Because of its general hardiness, people who don’t have ‘green thumbs’ will find them fairly easy to care for. With normal care, the olive tree will generally outlive any human and give useful food for many centuries.

If you ever pay a visit to us here at the Lavender Farm, just look along the fences of the Lavender, and that is where you will find our many Olive Trees. Alii chang believes that planting the olive trees and the lavender close together will help make them more compatible once manufactured together in one product. Watch out for the Cattle though, sometimes you will find them nibbling away at the olive trees. AKL Maui currently has one product that uses Olive Oil, which is the Lavender Olive Oil Goatmilk Soap. To learn more about that product, click here. http://www.aklmaui.com/p-116-lavender-olive-oil-goatmilk-soap.aspx.

Every $1 contributed through the Sustainable Aloha program goes towards planting more Olive trees & improving the quality of air on the planet. Trees planted through this program will support the Maui Food Bank.

AKL Maui Travels to the KCC Farmers Market

July 22nd, 2010

Organized by the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation, The Kapiolani Community College or KCC Farmers Market is a popular Saturday event for the Oahu communities. Honolulu’s premiere farmers market is the only market featuring all Hawaii grown and produced foods. The market runs from 7:30am to 11:00am. There will be some traffic and competitive parking that may take between 5-15 minutes, so get there early. Sometimes, you get lucky and most tents will open 15 minutes earlier. Vendors will be there to educate about their products, share about how to grow them, and relentlessly ramble about the many ways to prepare them.

AKL Maui is in attendance at the KCC Farmers Market either the third or fourth Saturday of each month. Please check out our events page at http://www.aliikulalavender.com/t-akltours.aspx to mark your calendar!
